Jane Eyre es una novela escrita por Charlotte Brontë, publicada en 1847 por Smith, Elder Company, que -en el momento de su aparición- consiguió gran popularidad, encumbrando a la autora como una de las mejores novelistas románticas, y es hoy considerada un clásico de la literatura en lengua inglesa.Narra la historia de Jane Eyre, una niña huérfana que fue criada por sus tíos cuando sus padres murieron. Al morir su tío, hermano de su madre, la tía y los primos comienzan a maltratarla y finalmente deciden enviarla al internado de Lowood con tan sólo 10 años. Allí conoce a Helen Burns, su única y verdadera amiga. Jane crece, se gradúa en Lowood y durante un tiempo trabaja allí como profesora, pero al cumplir los 18 años decide marcharse. Se anuncia en el periódico y consigue un trabajo como institutriz en la mansión de Thornfield Hall, donde se tendrá que ocupar de la educación de Adèle Varens, la protegida de Edward Rochester, dueño de Thornfield.La vida en Thornfield transcurre tranquila hasta que un día en el que ella va a echar una carta al pueblo y se encuentra con un hombre a caballo al que tiene que ayudar. Al volver a Thornfield, descubre que ese hombre es el propio señor Rochester. Al verla en su primer encuentro oficial, el señor Rochester se muestra mordaz y sarcástico, y acusa a Jane de haber embrujado a su caballo. Pasa el tiempo y, al ir conociéndolo, Jane termina enamorándose de él. Cuando piensa que su relación con él va mejor que nunca, Rochester vuelve a marcharse. Regresa a los pocos días para preparar una fiesta con unos amigos de la alta sociedad, entre ellos una bella señorita que todo el mundo dice que será su esposa, Blanche Ingram.
